Today, Mayor John Tory marked the official opening of 22 newly-renovated affordable homes that will provide 24/7 on-site supports for tenants at 4626 Kingston Road. The building was a former motel that has been renovated to provide affordable housing units. The property that the building sits on was acquired by the City in 2021, and will soon come to welcome a second affordable development.

A new, five-storey modular building designed by Montgomery Sisam Architects will be constructed at the same location, and will create a total of 64 additional affordable and supportive homes for people who are experiencing, or are at risk of homelessness. Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks. The City received capital funding from the federal government under Phase One of the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) in order to be able to construct it.

"We are committed to working with the other governments and our community partners to get more housing built as quickly as possible," said Tory. "Affordable and safe homes are vital for the good health and prosperity of our communities."

Both buildings will include studio apartments with private bathrooms and kitchenettes. Tenants will also have access to shared facilities in the modular housing building, that will include a laundry room, a communal area, a commercial kitchen, a dining area, and programming space.

Once the modular building is complete, a grand total of 86 new, safe, affordable homes with supports will be provided at the site. The homes will be dedicated to seniors, youth, and people who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness. The finished project will also offer an outdoor shared amenity space, a bike storage area, and a new driveway fitted with freshly paved sidewalks.
